Same Sex Outdoor Wedding Photography at Southlands Barn West Sussex

Wow, what a wedding. When Hannah first contacted me it was fairly short notice — her original photographer couldn’t make it and I had the availability. I am SO pleased I did because Hannah and Nicky turned out to be the sweetest couple and this day was one I will not forget in a hurry.
Southlands Barn, West Sussex
Southlands Barn is a stunning 17th century barn set in 120 acres of farmland in the heart of West Sussex, overlooking the South Downs National Park. Rolling fields, a beautiful lake and those breath-taking South Downs views make it a genuinely special place for a wedding. The staff were so helpful and friendly from the moment I arrived and I had never shot a wedding there before — but I absolutely hope to go back. I would not hesitate to recommend it to any couple looking for a relaxed, beautiful barn wedding in West Sussex.
Getting Ready
Nicky was definitely feeling the nerves — completely understandable! But apart from that the girls were all pretty chilled and everything seemed to be going to plan. And I got to see Nicky’s dress for the first time which is without question one of my absolute favourite parts of being a wedding photographer 😄
Then there was word that Hannah was arriving so I nipped off to find her — and found her with her dad, who could not have looked more proud. Just look at that smile. You can tell immediately that these two are made for each other. I left them to have a quiet toast together before guests started arriving — just a gorgeous private moment.
Back with Nicky just as mum was finishing buttoning up that incredible dress — the lace detail on the back was just stunning. A reassuring hug between mum and daughter, and then Nicky’s dad arrived. I very quickly learned that Nicky’s dad is a big jokester but also a secret softy 😉 I do love a cheeky dad — they make my job so much more fun!
And then there was the guest who was wearing trainers because her shoes had apparently broken — yet suspiciously had a matching handbag that went surprisingly well with said trainers. I personally think the trainers looked great 😂
The Ceremony
The outdoor ceremony was a go — not a rain cloud in sight and the backdrop of the South Downs was just extraordinary. First up was Nicky’s daughter as the sole bridesmaid and she absolutely nailed it — cool as a cucumber. Then Hannah and her dad. Then Nicky and her dad. And the moment the two dads greeted each other — both of them showing complete and utter pride in their daughters — was just one of those moments that stops you in your tracks.
Then I did something I have never done before. I ran backwards down the aisle taking pictures just in front of the brides and their dads. I am SO glad I did not end up on my bottom. It was completely worth it for that loving glance between Hannah and Nicky.
There were tears during the ceremony. Of course there were. This family is full of love and it was impossible not to feel every single bit of it.
The Reception
Inside the barn was absolutely beautiful — dried pampas grass and twinkling fairy lights creating the most gorgeous warm atmosphere. I could not resist sneaking a peek before the guests arrived and I am so glad I did.
The rest of the day was exactly what you want — warmth, laughter, joy and two brides who were completely and utterly happy.
