A Relaxed Outdoor Summer Wedding with South Downs Views

A fun, sun-soaked celebration near Chichester, West Sussex. An outdoor ceremony, lawn games, golden-hour views over the South Downs and a dance floor that did not stop.

Oh I LOVED this one. Some weddings you just know are going to be your kind of day from the second you arrive, and Bella & Ed’s was exactly that. Relaxed, full of laughter, gorgeous views for days, and so much love you could practically feel it bouncing off everyone. If you’re after a fun, outdoorsy summer wedding near Chichester with proper South Downs scenery, grab a cuppa and settle in, because this one is a treat.

A calm start in Emsworth

The day began at Bella’s home in Emsworth, and it was about the most chilled bridal prep going. No frantic energy, just a really lovely calm morning. Bella had even been out for a run before I arrived, so hats off to her! Her dress was absolutely gorgeous too, and yes, it had pockets. Always a winner.

From there I made sure to leave in plenty of time to get over to the venue, because I wanted to catch their friend who was acting as celebrant for the day. We had a quick chat about confetti, as Bella & Ed weren’t quite sure where they wanted it, and getting that nailed down early always makes the moment run so much more smoothly.

An outdoor ceremony at Great Ballard School

The ceremony was held outdoors at Great Ballard School near Chichester, and what a setting. The school building itself is beautiful, and it made a stunning backdrop behind the guests as they took their seats. Behind Bella & Ed the ground rolled up the hill towards a big tree with rope swings, and off to the groom’s right the South Downs opened right out. This whole corner of West Sussex, tucked between Chichester and Arundel inside the South Downs National Park, is one of the prettiest spots in the South East and it did not disappoint.

Here’s a lovely twist too. Bella & Ed had actually made it official earlier in the week at Edes House in Chichester, which meant this day was all about THEM. No rigid formalities, just a heartfelt ceremony led by one of their closest friends. And let me tell you, when a mate marries you the emotion hits different. There were happy tears, big laughs and so much warmth. It was a proper scorcher at 31 degrees, so guests settled into their seats and soaked up every word.

Don’t forget about Grandad

I have to tell you about this bit. Before the ceremony, Bella’s grandad, who is quite unsteady on his feet these days, was settled into a shady spot to the side, out of that fierce sun. As I walked past he gave me a little grin and said, “Oh, don’t forget about me!” As if I ever would.

So I kept him in my sights the whole way through. And here’s the moment that got me. As Bella walked down the aisle, her grandad stood up, all by himself, on his own two feet, just to watch his granddaughter come. It is the sweetest, most quietly powerful thing, and I made sure he’s there in the background of that shot.

I also caught a black and white frame I am a little bit in love with. The whole wedding party soft and blurred, and Grandad pin sharp in the middle of it all, watching on. That one is going on the wall, I reckon.

Confetti, a drone shot and lawn games

Once they were officially official (again!), it was straight into the good stuff. Confetti, hugs all round, and then I sent the drone up to grab everyone together from above, because there is no better way to capture just how many people came to celebrate these two.

Then it was all lawn games, cold drinks and sunshine. Such a relaxed, playful afternoon, exactly the kind of unposed fun I live for.

Speeches, toasts and a sea of champagne

The speeches were brilliant. Heartfelt, hilarious, the lot. My favourite frame from this part? Bella caught right in the middle of a sea of raised champagne flutes as everyone toasted the happy couple, shot in black and white with a bit of flash for drama. It is a cracker.

Golden hour, big views and a rope swing

And THEN the light went golden and the whole place turned magic. That big tree at the top of the hill has rope swings, and of course we put them to good use. Some of my favourite portraits of the whole day came from right there, with those endless South Downs views glowing behind them. Sunset over this part of the countryside is just unreal.

A first dance and a band that brought the roof down

Their first dance was high energy and fast paced. None of that gentle swaying business, these two came out of the gates! And then the band took over and it was game on. They got every single person up on their feet, and the dance floor stayed packed all night. Sweaty, joyful, arms in the air, best night ever kind of dancing. My favourite.
