Creative Wedding & Engagement Photography

Every so often I go back through a year of weddings and pull out the frames that made me grin like an idiot the second they landed on the back of the camera. These are those shots. The ones where I dragged the shutter, fired the flash at a slightly mad angle, got low, got a bit wet, or asked a couple to trust me on something that sounded completely ridiculous out loud.

None of it is an accident. I am ranked in the top ten in the world for flash, and almost all of these lean on off camera lighting. Here is exactly how each one happened, because I would much rather tell you than be mysterious about it.

The Couple Lit Up Under The Gazebo

Fontwell Racecourse, and this one was a proper production. At least six different gelled lights plus a softbox, all going at once. When people ask why I turn up with so much kit, this is why!

The Black And White Dancefloor Blur

An absolutely awesome dancefloor with one of the biggest disco balls I have ever seen hanging over it. Off camera flash, slow shutter speed, and then you just move with it. You get about one keeper in thirty with this technique and it is worth every duff frame.

The Two Brides At Newtown House Hotel

Here is my favourite bit of lying with light. This was still DAYLIGHT. A dull, dreary, grey day, and we were overlooking the hotel pub garden and the car park. Glamorous!

So I underexposed the whole scene to make all that clutter disappear into darkness, then put a backlight with a CTO gel behind them to fake some warmth, and lit them from the front. Car park, gone. Drama, arrived.

The Tunnel With The Red And Blue Lights

This was an engagement shoot the couple won in a raffle. I had donated it as a prize at a charity football match raising money for Cancer Research. I had been itching to play with my coloured gels, decided the tunnels were the perfect excuse, and off we went.

Golden Hour Under The Willow Tree

The bride really wanted a sunset for her October wedding. Unfortunately there was not one, and where we were standing there physically could not be one. So I built my own. I placed my lights to mimic a sunset coming through the trees, and I think it works rather well. No sunset? We can make one!
